Violent winds lash Sarawak’s coastal belt

MIRI: Ferocious winds lashed the entire coastal belt of Sarawak from Wednesday (Sept 16) night until early Thursday (Sept 17) morning.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department received reports from 27 villages and residential estates where trees were uprooted and toppled by the fierce wind.

The affected housing areas are in Miri, Limbang, Bintulu, Sibu, Samarahan and Kuching divisions, the department said in its latest updates.

These divisions are along the state’s coastal shores.

“The incidents from the strong wind happened between 8pm last night to 8am today.

“Fire and Rescue Department units from the respective divisions have responded to calls for help from the affected residents and members of the public,” the department said.

Reports from the ground said firemen were busy removing uprooted trees the whole night and into the morning hours.

Chain saws were used to cut big trees that were blown onto roads and houses.

No serious injuries to residents were reported so far.
