A few weeks ago, OpenAI launched a new feature – initially exclusive to the United States – enabling users to personalise their ChatGPT preferences, and thus obtain increasingly tailored responses. The feature is now available to all in the UK and the EU.
Users of the ChatGPT AI chatbot now have a very practical feature at their disposal, in the form of custom instructions that can be saved to their account. The idea is to be able to guide the intelligent assistant on crafting its next responses by providing various pieces of practical information. Note that this feature is available to everyone, whether or not you have a paid account.
To access it, go to your account menu and select “Custom Instructions”. You’ll then be able to answer two questions: “What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?” and “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?” You can briefly explain where you are, what you do (if it’s a business account), list your various interests, or highlight what you’re really looking for from ChatGPT.
You can also specify whether you prefer long, detailed or succinct answers, whether ChatGPT should take a stance on certain subjects or remain systematically neutral. These instructions will be used to improve the answers provided and, of course, shared with any plug-in you use (for ChatGPT Plus subscribers).
Thanks to these custom instructions, ChatGPT will be able to offer responses that are better tailored to individual requests. But, just like your prompts, the more precise your instructions, the better ChatGPT’s responses will be for you.
