Kuala Lumpur, 25 Jan 2021 (The Capital Post)- Many people are against the state of emergency, but do not dare to talk out of fear of being punished, says Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister.

Mahathir said in a recent blog post that he had talked to several individuals who felt the emergency was needless, citing different reasons.

Those he talked to, however, were reportedly afraid of going against a government under the emergency with extraordinary powers.

“I tried to explain what the government couldn’t do but they looked scared. They lowered their voices while looking around. They also told me not to let anyone know of their opinions,” he said.

“When asked to sign a letter of appeal for the emergency to be withdrawn, they refused.”

The emergency came into effect a day before Movement Control Order (MCO) 2.0 on Jan 13 with no parliament seating allowed and 10 years jail and 5 Mil fine for who go against the emergency. – The Capital Post
