GEORGE TOWN: There will be no political cooperation between the DAP and Umno, which includes in facing the upcoming general election, reiterated Lim Guan Eng today.
The DAP secretary-general, however, said the party had no problems cooperating with Umno on issues involving the people.
He cited an example where both DAP and Umno agreed to have a parliament sitting to debate on Covid-19 and their stand on the conflict in Myanmar and Palestine.
“We are prepared to work with Umno on issues which benefit the people, but not on party interests.
“DAP’s cooperation with Umno is on an ad hoc basis and only on issues that benefit the public,” he told newsmen here today.
He was asked to comment on the possibility of DAP having a political cooperation with Umno in the coming election after Umno decided not to cooperate with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the upcoming polls.
In a letter to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Bersatu chairman, Umno had said that they would remain with the Perikatan Nasional government until the dissolution of parliament.
On a separate matter, the former finance minister urged the Perikatan Nasional government not to U-turn on a policy he had introduced then, in granting taxpayers amnesty if they voluntarily declared their taxes.
He said the current administration was going against that policy by investigating some of the taxpayers’ accounts and demanding for their account records that stretched over the past six years.
He was commenting on a report in a Chinese vernacular newspaper, quoting an association as claiming that the government was asking some of those who took part in the programme to furnish their accounts for the past six years.
“This will erode the trust of the people and investors in the government.
“All this is mentioned in an official Inland Revenue Board letter to taxpayers on the voluntary tax declaration programme and it has legal standing. I am willing to stand as their witness if this matter is brought to court,” he added.- NST
