In making this call yesterday, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching said the government is aware of the importance of Bahasa Malaysia (BM) as the national language but it is equally vital for students to master English language as well.

“Following the recent remarks of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, I would like to encourage teachers to improve their skills in teaching and learning so that students can better master the language,” she said in her speech read by Ministry of Education (MoE) deputy director general Adzman Talib at the opening of the Ziarah Cakna 2020 programme at SK Ibnu Khaldun here.

Teo stressed that the MoE is committed to implementing policies to produce quality human capital for the country in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision agenda. She said teachers should play their role to guide children to study hard, be competitive and determined to lift themselves out of poverty.

On the Ziarah Cakna programme, she said the statistics last year showed that 40,158 primary school pupils and 26,428 secondary school students were visited by 63,313 primary school teachers and 39,715 secondary school teachers.

“Given the total number of students, families and teachers involved, imagine the success of the programme of the government through various initiatives of MoE,” she said.

She also advised teachers and students not to share any fake news.

“We are dealing with the dissemination of fake information on social media and MoE takes this matter seriously. During the programme, teachers can educate parents and the general public about the risks of sharing fake news. Let us educate students, parents and the general public to be more responsible on social media, use this programme as a medium to speak and also educate the community,” added Teo. – The Capital Post
