Sugarbook founder claims trial over ‘misleading statement’ on ‘sugar babies’

SHAH ALAM: Sugarbook founder Chan Eu Boon pleaded not guilty at the magistrates’ court here today to making misleading statements over registered “sugar babies” on its social media platform.

Chan, also known as Darren Chan, was slapped with one charge under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.

He was alleged to have used the website technave.com to publish a post, titled “Top 10 Sugar Baby Universities in Malaysia”, with the intention to cause public mischief.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum two years’ jail or a fine or both.

Magistrate Sabreena Bakar @ Bahari granted Chan bail of RM10,000 in one surety, and fixed March 26 for the next mention.

DPP Aliff Asraf Anuar Shahruddin appeared for the prosecution, and Chan was represented by T Shashi Dewan.

Chan had been placed under remand since last Friday to facilitate investigation under Section 505(b) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

The prosecution said it will proceed with one Section 505(b) charge against Chan.

Police initiated investigations into the website after it allegedly named 10 public and private universities as having the most students who chose to become “sugar babies” and sought “sugar daddies” to finance their lifestyles.

Sugarbook had also reportedly said it had seen a 40% increase in students registering to be “sugar babies” since January, with 12,705 students in the Klang Valley using the platform.- FMT
