Record 18 Covid-19 deaths in Singapore

PETALING JAYA: Singapore recorded 18 Covid-19 deaths yesterday, the highest in a single day since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

In a statement, Singapore’s health ministry said the 18 were aged between 55 and 96 years. Nine of them were fully vaccinated, eight were unvaccinated and one had been given a single dose. Seventeen of them had various underlying medical conditions.

The country’s death toll due to Covid-19 now stands at 264.

The Straits Times reported that the previous highest number of deaths in a single day was 15 recorded on Oct 14.

Singapore also recorded 3,862 new infections yesterday, bringing its total number of cases to 158,587.

The health ministry added that 3,221 of yesterday’s new cases were recorded in the community, 630 in migrant worker dormitories and 11 were imported cases. The local cases included 568 people above 60 years old.

Of the 77,040 individuals infected over the last 28 days, 98.7% had no or mild symptoms, 1% required respiratory assistance, 0.1% required ICU care, and 0.2% died.

As of Tuesday, 84% of Singapore’s population had been fully vaccinated while 85% had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.-FMT
