Its director Mohammad Yusoff Abustan said the peak period for the upcoming Hari Raya would be from Friday (April 21) to Sunday (April 23).

“In Perak, our department has identified several accident-prone hotspots such as the Menora Tunnel heading north and south, from Batu Gajah heading towards Siputih in Tronoh and Manjung town.

“To ensure a smooth and safer journey for all road users in Perak, we have assigned nearly 160 officers and personnel on duty during the peak days,” he told reporters after attending the state’s safety road campaign here on Tuesday (April 18).

On April 11, Plus Malaysia chief operating officer Datuk Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi said about two million vehicles would use its highway daily on April 20 to 21, 24 to 25, April 29 to May 1, and from May 4 to 7.

On request to have the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) camera at the Menora Tunnel, Mohammad Yusoff said they have yet to receive any updates on this matter.

“Having AES will certainly help reduce accidents at the tunnel.

“So far, there is no update on the matter but perhaps if the state government can make a request, it will speed up the procedure,” he said.

In 2019, former Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar said the 800m Menora Tunnel is one of the 11 new locations earmarked for the AES cameras to improve road safety.

Separately Mohammad Yusoff said the department received a RM400,000 bid for the AMY 1 plate number.

“Since its launch, we have collected about RM6mil for the AMY plate numbers. As for now, we only have 16 AMY popular numbers left.” – The Star
