One of a Twitter user to be charged for insulting the King

KUALA LUMPUR: A Twitter user is expected to be charged in court over a number of tweets insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Huzir Momahed said the Special Investigation Unit (D5) began investigating the case following a tweet by a user named “Fazrin Ismail”.

“We opened investigations on March 28 under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act for acting with seditious tendencies and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities.

“The suspect was arrested on April 3 and remanded until April 7 to help with investigations.

“Our investigations revealed eight tweets insulting and using offensive words against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 8).

He said the investigation papers were referred to the deputy public prosecutor who agreed that the suspect be charged with eight counts of misuse of network facilities.

“The suspect will be brought to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to be charged today.

“We advise the public to uphold the principles of the Rukun Negara including ‘Loyalty to King and Country’ and not publish or distribute any statements or rumours including articles that have seditious tendencies that could bring about disharmony, cause animosity as well as threaten public order and internal security,” he said. – The Star
