KUALA LUMPUR: The government may not need to implement a nationwide or statewide Movement Control Order (MCO) after taking into account the implementation of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government would instead enforce targeted MCO based on localities or clusters.
This move is an initiative under Focus One (Controlling the Spread of Covid-19) of the Strategic Programme to Empower the People and Economy (Pemerkasa).
“The government will also implement Covid-19 outbreak control strategies in a more targeted manner based on science and data to minimise the negative impact from virus to the country’s economic activity.
“At the same time, taking into account the implementation of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, the government may not need to implement a nationwide or statewide MCO,” he said in a special televised address today.
Muhyiddin said to accelerate the target of achieving herd immunity to December this year, the government would increase the allocation for the immunisation programme from RM3 billion to RM5 billion.
It was previously announced that the initial target of achieving herd immunity was set for the first quarter of next year.
He said to achieve this, 15,000 officers would be placed at nearly 950 vaccination centres across the country.
“With this, the government has agreed that the Covid-19 special aid of RM200 monthly be extended to include public service officers who are involved in the immunisation programme at the vaccination centres.”-NST
