New Covid-19 cases up 13.5%, deaths nearly double

PETALING JAYA: The number of new Covid-19 cases increased from 26,355 to 29,886 – or 13.5% – last week from the week before, says health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In his update for the week ending July 16, Noor Hisham said the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to public hospitals also increased by 18.3% per 100,000 compared with the preceding week.

However, there was no increase in admissions in quarantine centres.

Overall bed occupancy for non-critical beds increased by 2% while utilisation of intensive care unit (ICU) beds rose by 3%.

Active cases rose during the week by 19.5% to 45,542.

“Recoveries also rose by 18.9% from 19,138 to 22,757,” Noor Hisham said.

“The number of deaths increased by 61.5% from 39 to 63, bringing the cumulative figure for fatalities to 35,911.”

He said a total of 4,648,931 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the country since January 2020.-FMT
