PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has hit out at those who often reprimand the government’s detractors over Putrajaya’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In two separate Facebook posts, the former prime minister noted the oft-repeated reply to critics to focus on containing the virus, instead of taking Putrajaya to task.
But, Najib said, the main problem was that the head of the government was never focused on combating Covid-19, in an apparent swipe at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
“If he was focused, there would be no need to implement half-baked movement control orders, or fool the people about a ‘total lockdown’ that wasn’t,” he said.
“If he was focused on the infections, then how could there be a 12-fold increase despite an emergency which saw Parliament suspended so no one could disturb the government?”
Najib accused Muhyiddin of being focused solely on retaining power.
He said Umno should not be blamed for the government’s razor-thin majority, noting that it was the case since Perikatan Nasional came to power.
“Which is why we want him to step down so the government can really focus on Covid,” he said, adding that Muhyiddin, who is also the National Security Council (MKN) chairman, had fumbled numerous times when it came to policies to contain the virus.
Najib also scoffed at claims that the nation was at the cusp of containing the virus.
He challenged those who believed so to return to their constituencies and repeat it to the people.
“Go ahead. Will the people pat you on the shoulder and say, ‘you’re right, good job and PN is the best?”
His posts come as Umno and the opposition continue to pressure Muhyiddin to step down after Umno retracted its support for the PN government.
Muhyiddin has since insisted he enjoyed the majority and accused those who were trying to topple him of doing so as he refused to intervene in court cases involving several individuals.-FMT
