PETALING JAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa has requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to stop Nur Sajat from posting on the social media, following a controversy sparked by the transgender entrepreuner’s picture wearing the female prayer attire while perfoming umrah in Mecca.
Bernama reported that Mujahid held a meeting yesterday with the internet authority MCMC.
“I will take firm step over the action of Muhammad Sajad Kamaruzzaman who uploaded photos and video of him wearing women’s prayer garments when in Mecca which viraled on the social media and led rise to discomfort among Muslims,” he was quoted as saying, using Sajat’s name as registered by the National Registration Department.
“Immediate action will be taken by MCMC,” he said after the meeting held at his office in Putrajaya.
Mujahid said MCMC has the power to stop any social media contents that could create “unease especially to Muslims”.
Mujahid has insisted that Sajat perform the umrah rituals as a man.
Sajat, who runs a successful business selling ladies products, sparked controversy after she posted videos of her wearing a telekung, the female prayer attire, while in Mecca.
It prompted an angry reaction from Malaysian social media users, as well as comments from Mujahid who accused her of undermining the image of Islam as well as Malaysia’s ties with Riyadh.
“We feel regret because (Sajat) has marred the image of Islam as a person who is a man, which is stated so in the identification card,” he reportedly said.
Transgender rights group Justice for Sisters has hit out Mujahid over his comments, saying there were concerns over Sajat’s safety in Saudi Arabia.
The group said this was because Saudi Arabia criminalises trans people based on their gender expression. -FMT
