Marine cops arrest duo, confiscate 151 cartons of untaxed liquor, vehicles worth almost RM300k

JOHOR BARU: Marine police have arrested two men, including a Myanmar national, and confiscated 151 cartons of untaxed liquor and vehicles worth almost RM300,000 during an operation at Gelang Patah here.

Marine Police Region II commander Asst Comm Muhd Zailani Abdullah said that the duo were arrested during a routine patrol by the police near a beach area at Forest City near Tanjung Kupang at about 8.20pm on Monday (Oct 19).

“The team had noticed two cars driven in a suspicious manner. The team followed the first car into Taman Nusaria, before apprehending the 28-year-old driver for inspection.

“The second car, driven by a 32-year-old Myanmar national, was apprehended at Medan Nusa Perintis 8 at about 8.50pm, ” he said in a statement here on Tuesday (Oct 20).

Inspection of the first car found 64 cartons of contraband liquor, while 87 cartons were found inside the second car.

“The liquor and vehicles are worth around RM282,281 and have been brought to the Marine Police headquarters for further action, ” he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, for possession of contraband items.

The offence carries a fine up to 20 times the value of the contraband, or jail up to three years, or both.
