KUALA LUMPUR: Have you ever wanted a smartphone that can go from a 6.4in screen to a tablet-like 10.2in screen at the drop of a hat? Well, Huawei delivered exactly today during the global launch of the Mate XT Ultimate Design smartphone held in Kuala Lumpur.

The device, originally launched in its home market of China back in September last year, features a tri-folding OLED display, which means it can be unfolded twice.

First unfolding to a screen measuring 7.9in and then again to 10.2in on the fly – all while only measuring 3.6mm thick when opened to its largest size – the Mate XT Ultimate Design’s screen also has up to a 90hz refresh rate.

Huawei says that when fully expanded in “triple-screen mode”, the device becomes ideal for watching movies, while “dual screen mode” works well for reading and productivity use cases like checking and replying to emails.

The device is better suited for calls and photography when in its “single-screen mode”, which is akin to a more standard candybar form factor, the company says.

The device also boasts an almost nonexistent gap when fully folded, which makes dust and gravel getting in less of a concern when it’s tucked away in a pocket or bag.

Switching attention to the camera setup on the device, the foldable has a 50-megapixel main shooter, a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor with 5.5 times optical zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor.

Alongside the main camera setup is an 8-megapixel front-facing hole-punch selfie camera on the leftmost panel, which can be used whether the device is folded or in its unfolded form.

The Malaysian version of the device will come with 16GB RAM and 1TB internal storage priced at RM14,999 in either Black or Red colour options.

Pre-orders will be available from today until March 14, with buyers during the period entitled to one year’s worth of device screen protection worth RM3,999 from Huawei.

Huawei’s tri-folding offering also includes a suite of artificial intelligence features, such as a voice assistant, voice-to-text, real-time document translations, and photo editing.

Powering it all is a 5,600mAh battery, capable of 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

The company further unveiled the Huawei MatePad Pro tablet, which has a 13.2in OLED screen with a PaperMatte anti-glare coating to minimise light reflection, 10,100mAh battery, and is priced at RM4,999.

Also debuting today was the Huawei Band 10 fitness watch priced at RM199, featuring Heart Rate Variability (HRV) tracking during sleep, which can detect health abnormalities, along with the Emotional Wellbeing Assistant first introduced on the Watch GT5.

The unveiling additionally saw the introduction of QR payment support for Touch ‘n Go ewallet, GCash, and MPay to the GT5 Watch Series and Band 10.

Alongside it is the Huawei FreeArc open ear earbuds, which promises greater comfort with the C-bridge design that the company says can be moulded to securely fit various ear shapes and IP57 water and dust resistance, priced at RM599.
