Heavy rainfall causes flash floods in 22 Muar districts

MUAR: Heavy early morning rainfall has caused flash floods to hit 22 areas in the district, and also affected Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah (HPSF) here.

In a statement, the Muar district disaster management committee secretariat said the flash floods were caused by heavy rainfall, which started at 4am on Monday (July 13) morning and coincided with high tides.

“As of 10am, the affected areas are the Muar city area, Kampung Sabak Awor, Kampung Seri Menanti, Kampung Parit Tengah, Jalan Bentayan, Parit Perupok and Kampung Dato Seri Amar Diraja, ” it said.

It added that one temporary relief centre has been opened at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Maharani while four others at Dewan Maharani, SMK Dato Seri Amar Diraja, Sekolah Kebangsaan Parit Keroma and SMK Sungai Abong are on standby.

The Secretariat also said that enforcement agencies such as the police, the Civil Defence Force and the Fire and Rescue Department are monitoring the situation closely.

When contacted, HPSF director Dr Muhammad Yusof Sibert said the hospital’s operations were not affected although flood water entered the hospital compound.

“No patients have been moved due to the flash floods, and floodwaters have been decreasing since 10.30am, ” he said.
