Half of new Covid-19 infections in Category 2

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded 22,491 new Covid-19 infections yesterday, with 11,725 of them (52.13 per cent) in Category 2.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 10,601 new cases (47.14 per cent) were in Category 1; 71 cases (0.31 per cent) in Category 3; 44 cases (0.20 per cent) in Category 4; and 50 cases in Category 5 (0.22 per cent).

This brings the cumulative Covid-19 cases in Malaysia to 4,054,926, he said.

“A total 22,109 of the new cases were local transmissions (21,243 Malaysians and 866 foreigners); and 382 others were imported (364 Malaysians and 18 foreigners).

“Of the 165 new Covid-19 cases in Categories 3, 4, and 5 reported on March 23, 43 cases (26.06 per cent) were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, 71 cases (43.03 per cent) have received two Covid-19 vaccine doses but have yet to receive booster doses, 51 cases (30.91 per cent) have received booster doses, 99 cases (60 per cent) aged 60 and above; 98 cases (59.39 per cent) with comorbidities and two pregnant women (1.21 per cent),” he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said 141 of the 332 Covid-19 cases currently being treated at ICUs were confirmed cases and 191 others were either suspected, possible Covid-19 or under investigation.

He said 189 Covid-19 cases currently in ICUs required ventilator support.

Meanwhile, a total 26,234 new recoveries were recorded yesterday, bringing the cumulative to 3,771,463, he said.

“No new Covid-19 clusters were detected yesterday, and a total 273 clusters are still active. This brings the total number of clusters in the country so far to 6,918.”

He said the national infectivity rate for Covid-19 stands at Rt 0.90, with Selangor recording the highest Rt at 1.03, while other states registered Rt below 1.0.

Among them are Sarawak and Perak (both at 0.99); Kuala Lumpur FT 0.96 and Melaka 0.95. Sabah reported the lowest Rt at 0.64.- NST
