RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 590 counterfeit branded handbags valued at nearly RM90,000 yesterday (Oct 13).
Two men were arrested for possession of the items during an operation in Chabang Empat Salam.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said that the GOF team from the Seventh Battalion was conducting Operation Taring Wawasan when they spotted a suspicious lorry in the area at 6.20pm.
“The GOF personnel stopped the lorry, and upon inspection, discovered various counterfeit handbags inside.
“These handbags, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand, lacked valid documentation. The driver and his attendant were subsequently detained,” he said.
Ros Azhan said that the two suspects, aged 30 and 31, were reportedly hired by an individual to deliver the items to local buyers.
In a separate incident, a 27-year-old man was arrested in Tumpat for possessing 9,000kg of coconuts valued at RM45,000.
During the operation at Pos Nibong at 2.15pm, authorities also seized the lorry used for transporting the coconuts.
“The coconuts are believed to have been smuggled to Thailand via an illegal jetty in Nibong,” he added.
