PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has denied allegations that it has blocked certain news articles published by foreign media outlets.

Responding to a WhatsApp message which claimed that it had blocked specific news articles from Reuters, Al-Jazeera, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Nikkei Asia and Yahoo News, MCMC said it found that the URLs had either been intentionally or accidentally modified or shortened.

As a result, it said, those who clicked on the links were directed to a webpage which made it seem like the articles no longer existed.

“Our study found that the articles still exist, can be accessed and were not deleted or taken down by the news portals as alleged,” it said in a statement.

“This clearly shows that the allegations are untrue and intended to mislead internet users in Malaysia.”

MCMC urged the public to properly evaluate such messages and refrain from sharing unverified news.-FMT
