SIBU: The unexpected heavy rain on Monday (Feb 17), which resulted in rising flood waters, forced SK Nanga Balingiau in rural Kanowit to ask its 98 pupils to return home during recess.

The school’s senior assistant, Donald Slan, when contacted, said they had to resort to such measures as the water kept rising due to continuous rain since 6am today.

“The flood waters are between 0.3m to 1m deep and still rising (as at 10am Monday). We had to ask the pupils to go home, or else they would be stranded in the school later,” he said.

He added that the Primary 1 to 5 pupils had been placed at the

computer lab, while those from Primary 6 at the teachers’ quarters.

Donald said the road leading to the school was now only passable to heavy vehicles.

Another school in Kanowit, SK Sungai Tuah, was also affected by floods.

However, classes went on as usual for the 53 students at the school, as the water level around the school compound was not high.

According to the state Fire and Rescue Department, only the school

compound was affected by the flood. -The Star
