PETALING JAYA: If the government is to meet the requirements it has set to move into Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan, vaccination rates will need to be increased rapidly and maintained over the course of months, former prime minister Najib Razak has said.
He said the most recent testing numbers fell short of the rate needed to reach Phase 3 before September.
Vaccination rates must be maintained at an average rate of 267,357 doses per day for the next 74 days until Sept 1 to meet the condition of 40% coverage, he said.
The current rate of vaccinations was not enough, he said, giving figures to show that the number of vaccinations had gone from 128,912 on June 13 to a peak of 221,706 on June 17 before dropping back to 140,573 on June 20.
However, immunisation coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said earlier today that the government hoped to administer an average of 389,000 doses a day in July and 433,000 doses in August.
He had previously said that the vaccination rate would accelerate once shipments of the Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines were delivered in the coming months.-FMT
