The 62-year-old victim, a farmer, was said to have been cooking on the second floor of their house when the 30-year-old suspect called him downstairs prior to the 8am incident.

Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Nasri Mansor said an argument was sparked when the father scolded the son for getting drunk.

“The suspect was believed to have grabbed a machete nearby and tried attacking his father, but the older man managed to avoid getting slashed,” he said.

ACP Nasri said the victim fell and slipped down a hill near the scene following the incident.

He said upon seeing this, the suspect immediately went to his aunt’s house nearby and told her about the matter, and she alerted the village chief.

The village chief and some villagers then brought the suspect to the police station at about 2pm and a report was lodged.

“Initial investigations found that the incident had started due to a misunderstanding as the victim had constantly scolded his son every time he got drunk,” ACP Nasri said.

The victim was found dead with multiple stab wounds and injuries on his arms, face and head.

The suspect was remanded and is being investigated for murder. He also had his urine tested for drugs, but it turned out negative.
