BUKIT MERTAJAM: Counterfeit sports apparel seized from last year’s Pesta Pulau Pinang 2019 was put through the shredding machine to ensure they never see the market.

The imitation goods in the form of sports shoes, jerseys and handbags bearing famous brands were among items worth more than RM1mil destroyed by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry in Penang this year.

The ministry’s Penang director Mohd Ridzuan Ab Ghapar said it had seized RM1.94mil worth of goods last year and a portion of it came from the annual event in Sungai Nibong in George Town.

“Some of the seized items were from the Pesta last year and meant to be sold to visitors at the event,” he said told a press conference at the ministry’s depot in Bukit Minyak on Friday (Oct 16).

He added that this year the agency has disposed of RM1.01mil worth of goods seized from 109 cases.

“So far this year, we have inspected 37,094 premises throughout the state which saw 441 compounds amounting to RM161,550 issued.

“Products worth RM2.52mil were also seized. These include sports shoes, slippers, track bottoms, T-shirts and handbags bearing famous brand names,” he said.

Apart from counterfeit apparel products, pirated DVDs, weighing scales and instant noodles were also disposed of. -The Star
