KLUANG: The 5th Batallion of the General Operations Force here busted a cigarette smuggling syndicate following the arrest of a suspect at a house in Paloh last night.
Commanding officer Superintendent Dimin Awang said 5,580 cartons of contraband cigarettes, valued about RM987,456, were found at the house in Jalan Murni and the largest seizure in the district this year.
He said the suspect had been active for about three months and the cigarettes were smuggled in from Indonesia.
“We also seized a mobile phone worth about RM1,000. Initial investigations showed that the suspect was using the house as a temporary storage and the cigarettes were for the Kluang market,” said Dimin when contacted.
He said the suspect and cigarettes were taken to the Kluang police headquarters for further action and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967.-NST
