PETALING JAYA: The industry vaccination centre (PPV) that just opened at the KL International Airport (KLIA) will vaccinate over 20,000 workers from the aviation industry, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said the move was part of the government’s ongoing effort to protect those in the transport sector.
“This programme is aimed at expediting the vaccination of an estimated 22,243 aviation and other related industry workers at KLIA,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Dr Wee said the industry PPV jointly set up by the Science, Technology, and Innovation and Health ministries, began the vaccination exercise yesterday, which would culminate on Sept 24.
The centre was set up at Anjung Tinjau, Terminal One KLIA, and will operate from 8am to 6pm on weekdays.
Dr Wee said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd was liaising with several airlines and related sectors to get workers immunised.
This includes employees of Malaysia Airlines Bhd, Malindo Air, ground handling provider AeroDarat, foreign airlines represented by the Airline Operators Committee, and cargo workers represented by the Airfreight Forwarders Association of Malaysia.
Dr Wee also said more PPV would open to speed up the vaccination of some 19,259 rail and bus workers.
He added that his ministry was working with the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force to finalise the nationwide vaccination programme for 355,064 bus, taxi and e-hailing drivers, including p-hailing workers.
“The cost of this vaccination programme, to be implemented as public vaccinations, will be fully borne by the government,” Dr Wee said.
On June 25, National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said port and cargo workers would be the first in the transportation sector to get vaccinated before it is expanded to other workers.-The Star
