WhatsApp has added a new update to give users the option to mute calls from unknown numbers.
The company explained that the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ update helps to give users more privacy and control over incoming calls.
“It helps to automatically screen out spam, scams, and calls from unknown people for increased protection. These calls will not ring on your phone, but will be visible in your Call list, in case it turns out to be someone important,” the company said in a blog posting on June 20.
To activate the feature, click Settings > Privacy > Calls > Silence unknown callers.
In the Help Centre, WhatsApp said that users can contact the unknown caller from the Calls tab or tap on the number to send a message.

“If you call or message the silenced caller, you won’t be able to silence their calls in the future,” WhatsApp said.
Alternatively, users can choose to stop receiving calls from unknown numbers by blocking them.
WhatsApp said it is also introducing Privacy Checkup, a step-by-step feature to guide users through the various privacy settings on the app.
Clicking on Privacy Checkup will let users see controls for who can contact them, access to personal info such as profile photo and additional security measures like fingerprint lock.
