IPOH: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry is monitoring the prices of goods sold in Pangkor to ensure there is no price hike come Jan 1.

Its director Saifullizan Kamarul Zaman said with the island becoming duty-free from next month, officers were now checking prices of goods and services to ensure that business owners did not take the opportunity to increase prices drastically.

He said they would do another inspection on Jan 1.

“During festivities and long holidays, tourists complain of increased prices of food at restaurants.

“We will carry out frequent checks on the goods sold and also on the service industry including hotels, restaurants, salons and so forth, ” he said.

Saifullizan was speaking to reporters after visiting a Tesco outlet in Ipoh to check on the festive season price control scheme in conjunction with the Christmas celebrations.

He said they had also engaged with the small traders and hawkers association on the island.

“We have briefed them on the price control, and the steps and actions that could be taken if they fail to adhere to the rules and regulations, ” he added. -The Star
