KUALA LUMPUR: The percentage of candidates who scored a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2020 dropped slightly from the previous year.
Malaysian Examination Council (MPM) council member Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Razzaly, who is also Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) vice-chancellor, said the number of candidates who scored 5A or 4A in 2019 was 802 while for 2020 the figure dropped 7.61 per cent to 741.
The number of candidates scoring 5A dropped from 42 in 2019 to 23 in 2020, while candidates scoring 4A also dropped from 760 in 2019 to 718 in 2020.
“Meanwhile, 554 of the four flat candidates are from the B40 category.
“The national CGPA creased from 2.77 in 2019 to 2.78 in 2020, but the improved achievement between both the years is not significant as it was only 0.01 points,” he said in a live press conference via Cisco Webex today.
Also present was MPM chief executive Mohd Fauzi Mohd Kassim.
The percentage of candidates scoring 3.09 CGPA has increased from 33.45 per cent or 14,994 in 2019 to 33.69 per cent or 14,482 candidates in 2020.
Candidates scoring between 2.00 and 3.00 CGPA decreased from 51.81 per cent with 23,221 candidates in 2019 to 50.97 per cent or 21,910 candidates in 2020.
“Insya-Allah I am still confident STPM leavers will still have a bigger chance of entering public universities,” he added.
He also noted the results made by candidates from urban areas still surpassed the rural areas, with 2.80 and 2.78 CGPA respectively.
He said that the gap between the two groups is still the same as 2019.
