State polls: Second meeting between Penang Pakatan, Barisan to be held soon, says Chow

Estimate Reading Time: 2 minutes

GEORGE TOWN: The second meeting between state Pakatan Harapan representatives and Barisan Nasional is slated to happen soon.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the meeting would take place soon with hopes that it would be this week or next week.

“We have yet to set a date but it will happen soon. We do not have much time left, so either this week or the next.

“We hope the meeting will move us closer to an agreement,” Chow said on Tuesday (May 9) during a press conference held after the swearing in of the new mayor at City Hall, in George Town, Penang.

Chow, who is the state Pakatan chairman, shared that for now the results of the first meeting have not been brought to the central level.

“This is because, as long as the state level can handle it, we will deal with it at the state level.

“We only report what decisions we have reached to them (national Pakatan Harapan leadership).

“We do hope that these discussions will not be more than two or three meetings long,” he said.

During the first meeting, Chow had said that both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan had come to an understanding that they would not contest against each other in Penang.

The decision was reached during their first meeting between the state Pakatan leadership and Umno on May 1.

Chow said the main thing was to not see both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan competing against each other in the state.

In the previous state elections in 2018, DAP captured the most seats with 19, followed by PKR (14) and two each for Parti Amanah Negara, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Umno. One seat went to PAS.

A total of 40 seats would be up for grabs in the coming state elections, likely to be held in July. – The Star
