KUCHING: Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen should step down as the party has let the people down, said Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) Youth chief Michael Tiang.

He said Sarawak DAP had remained silent although Putrajaya had treated the state unfairly.

As examples, he cited the appointment of the chairman of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) without consultation with the state, the relocation of the High Court registry from Sarawak to Sabah, challenging Sarawak in the oil and gas dispute, and the state of dilapidated schools.

“Has Sarawak DAP said anything? Nothing. These are all in Sarawak’s interests but yet it has kept quiet.”

He said Chong should resign like former education minister Maszlee Malik since he had failed to protect the state’s rights.

Tiang said Sarawakians could not accept Pakatan Harapan as it had failed to fulfil its election promises in the state.

Sarawak DAP, he said, should be at the forefront with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), fighting and defending the state’s rights.

Earlier, Serian DAP Youth chief Brolin Nicholsion had told SUPP to look at the party’s work in the state, especially in the rural areas.

He said DAP had implemented several education programmes in rural areas as part of its Impian Malaysia plan.

However, Tiang hit back at DAP, questioning what sort of reforms it had carried out.

“Sarawak DAP has not brought any education reforms. It promised a lot of things, including giving us autonomy in education.

“If Sarawak DAP had fulfilled its promise of giving us back the 20% oil royalty, it wouldn’t need to carry out its Impian Malaysia programme.

“We would be a developed state by now and it would not be an ‘impian’ (dream) any more.

“That’s why we must not trust Malayan parties to take care of Sarawak,” he said. -FMT
