KUALA LUMPUR: The sedition charges made against Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has nothing to do with the upcoming polls in six states, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said it was the Attorney General Chambers’ decision to charge the Kedah Mentri Besar as they believed there was sufficient evidence to prosecute him.

“Muhammad Sanusi’s arrest could be related to Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who said on Facebook that the issue regarding his (Sanusi’s) statement – which is considered insulting to the Selangor royal institution – is not over yet,” he told reporters during the Mara Educators’ Day 2023 here on Tuesday (July 18).

Ahmad Zahid also said that Muhammad Sanusi would still be eligible to participate in the state polls as he had been sentenced (or found guilty) of any charges.

When asked why Muhammad Sanusi was arrested at 3am, Zahid said it was up to the enforcement agency concerned.

“The enforcement agency can make an arrest at any time and have the power to do so 24/7,” he said.

Muhammad Sanusi was arrested by the police at 3am on Tuesday.

In a video posted on social media, Muhammad Sanusi is seen surrounded by plainclothes policemen.

His political secretary Hilmi Abd Wahab said that a group of 20 policemen had waited outside Muhammad Sanusi’s hotel room before he was taken to the Gombak police headquarters.
