KUALA LUMPUR (June 15): The ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar today, supported by firmer crude oil prices.
At 9.01am, the local note had ticked up to 4.1120/1150 against the greenback from 4.1130/1150 at yesterday’s close.
At the time of writing, the international oil benchmark Brent crude was 0.48% higher at US$73.21 (about RM301.15) per barrel.
However, the ringgit’s gains were capped by the market apprehension ahead of the two-day US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) monetary policy meeting starting later today.
ActivTrades trader Dyogenes Rodrigues Diniz said the FOMC meeting and report would be the most significant events for a while as they could offer glimpses into the next monetary policy steps that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is likely to take.
“The Fed will also announce its decision on interest rates on Wednesday (tomorrow), but it is unlikely that any change will occur on this occasion.
“In fact, among the options available to the Fed to control inflation, changing interest rates is likely to be the last resort,” he said.
From the technical viewpoint, Diniz said the greenback could keep losing ground until it reaches the 4.0950 level versus the local unit.
At the opening bell, the ringgit was traded mixed against a basket of major currencies.
It depreciated against the pound to 5.8024/8067 from 5.7952/7980 at yesterday’s close, and eased against the euro to 4.9837/9874 from 4.9817/9841 yesterday.
The local note was slightly stronger against the Singapore dollar at 3.0994/1019 from 3.0997/1014, and strengthened vis-a-vis the yen to 3.7358/7385 from 3.7500/7522 previously.-BERNAMA
