SIBU: A piano technician sold off his father’s land for RM180,000 to invest in a get-rich-quick scheme but ended up being conned.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said, the 48-year old victim at about 2pm on May 23 was surfing the internet when he stumbled upon a link to a website.

“He clicked the link to download an application. As he was interested in the high dividends from an alleged investment scheme, he sold off his father’s land,” he said.

ACP Stanley said that the victim made three bank transfers totalling RM38,000 on May 24 and 25 to three account numbers provided by the suspect to participate in the scheme.

“On May 25, he wanted to withdraw the dividends, which were credited into his application. However he was told to make more investments to be eligible for the withdrawal,” said ACP Stanley.

The victim did as told and banked in another RM142,000, but later realised that he had been cheated when he failed to receive the dividends.

ACP Stanley said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.-The Star
