KUALA LUMPUR: Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh today said that certain parts of Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara under her constituency have been gazetted and cannot be used for future development.

She said the previous Pakatan Harapan government had made the decision to gazette parts of the park, covering 111ha, last year.

“This is a great victory for Kuala Lumpur folk. On average, more than 1,000 people visit this park every day,” she said at a press conference outside Parliament.

Yeoh said the gazetting of the park had also been published on the website of the Attorney-General’s Chambers on March 9 and July 29.

She said parts of the forest had not been gazetted as the land lease owners had not agreed to it. “We tried to negotiate with them but we could not reach an agreement.”

The former deputy minister clarified that the gazette did not cover the ongoing court dispute over Taman Rimba Kiara.

“Taman Rimba Kiara is situated at the foothills,” she said, adding the courts had not delivered a decision on the dispute.

In her election manifesto, Yeoh had stated that she would fight to gazette Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara as a federal park.

She said the green lung in the city centre needed to be preserved for future generations and prevent it from being involved in land grab attempts.- FMT
