KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has notified the Election Commission (EC) on the unexpected vacancy of the Pulai parliamentary seat, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

He said that the notification was sent on Tuesday (July 25) in line with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution to EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh.

“This is to inform them that the seat has become vacant after the passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, the Pulai MP on Sunday (July 23).

“Therefore, in accordance with the article, the EC must fill the vacancy of the parliamentary seat of District P 161 in Pulai, Johor within 60 days from the vacancy date confirmed by the EC,” he said in the statement on Tuesday (July 25).

The statement further read that the Malaysian Parliament extended its prayers and condolences to Salahuddin’s family.

Salahuddin, who was the Parti Amanah Negara Deputy president, passed away at the Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Kedah, at about 9pm on Sunday (July 23).

Salahuddin, 61, suffered a brain haemorrhage at 10.15pm on Saturday (July 22) and underwent surgery Sunday morning.

He contested in GE14 in 2018 under Pakatan Harapan and won both the Pulai parliamentary seat and the Johor state seat of Simpang Jeram.
