Pahang flood victims soar to 26,760; Temerloh worst-hit

KUANTAN: Floods in Pahang have worsened, with the number of evacuated residents rising to 26,760 as of this morning, compared to 23,000 yesterday evening.

As of 9am, the flood victims, from 7,222 families, are taking shelter at 276 relief centres at nine districts in the state.

Temerloh, the worst-hit district, recorded a drastic increase in the number of evacuees at 10,189 people from 2,744 families, who are being housed at 67 relief centres today, compared to 6,220 yesterday.

Maran has 3,678 evacuees from 1,005 families at 35 relief centres, followed by Lipis with 2,528 victims from 664 families at 39 evacuation centres.

Kuantan has 2,339 evacuees from 647 families at 35 relief centres, followed by Jerantut (2,066), Raub (2,014), Pekan (1,689), Bera (1,255) and Rompin (1,002).

Meanwhile, the death toll from floods in the state since early this month stands at five, while another person is still missing.

Two people in Jerantut died after they were swept away by floodwaters on Jan 3; one person in Maran drowned after he slipped and fell into a river; while another person in Lipis drowned after the boat she was travelling in capsized. Both incidents occurred on Jan 4

The fifth victim, in Temerloh, died of electrocution when he touched an iron pole in his flooded garage on Jan 6.- NST
