PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says Malaysia’s National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme is on track to be completed by December this year.

High-density states such as Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang are expected to be immunised by October, Muhyiddin said in a televised address to announce the RM40 billion Pemerkasa Plus relief aid package tonight.

“By the end of June, God-willing, we will be able to achieve our target of 150,000 doses a day through the additional supply of vaccines, setting up of more vaccination centres, the introduction of drive-through vaccinations and the addition of volunteers.

“I plead with those who have got their vaccine appointments to show up at the vaccine centres that have been set. It is our joint responsibility to ensure the nation achieves herd immunity by the end of the year,” he said.

Muhyiddin also reiterated his call for universal access to the Covid-19 jabs in a speech tonight to the 74th World Health Assembly held virtually in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said vaccine equity was still a major issue internationally, adding that the global community cannot win the war against Covid-19 unless every nation had equal access to the jabs.

“These vaccines must be affordable and accessible to all. We joined the Covax facility to facilitate the equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines globally and we commend the World Health Organization for spearheading this effort,” he said.

Malaysia has recently started receiving shipments of the AstraZeneca vaccines which were procured through the Covax facility.-FMT
