ALOR STAR: The flood situation in Kedah further deteriorated as the number of evacuees climbed to 754 people as at 8am today, compared to 526 people recorded in the last 24 hours.
Kedah Civil Defence Force Disaster Management Committee Secretariat chief Mohd Muaz Mohd Yusof said the evacuees, from 205 families, had sought shelter at 13 relief centres in five districts.
Muaz said the Pendang district recorded the highest number of flood evacuees with 292 people from 75 families, after the Dewan Cenderawasih relief centre was activated yesterday to provide shelter for 68 people from 22 families.
“There are 224 evacuees from 53 families taking shelter at the Dewan Rakan Sukan flood relief centre in Tanah Merah which has been activated last Thursday,” he said in a statement.
He said Kota Setar recorded the second highest number of flood evacuees with 272 people from 79 families following the activation of the Sekolah Kebangsaan Haji Wahab relief centre yesterday afternoon after 24 people from five families were evacuated from their homes.
The remaining evacuees in Kota Setar are seeking shelter at the SK Langggar, SK Suka Menanti and SK Darul Hikmah relief centres.
Muaz said the Kubang Pasu district was the third worst affected district when 141 people from 36 families were relocated to the Dewan Kampung Tradisi Lebah Keriang, SMK Changlun and SK Malau relief centres yesterday.
He said the SK Malau flood relief centre was activated at 11pm yesterday to provide shelter for 26 people from four families.
“In Pokok Sena district, 34 people from 10 families are seeking shelter at Surau Kampung Permatang Limau while another nine people from two families have been evacuated to the SK Tualang relief centre,” he said.
He added that in Baling district, 15 people from five families were still seeking shelter at the SK Siong and Tunku Putera flood relief centres as at 8am today.-NST
