PUTRAJAYA: The name of the National Registration Department officer who allegedly asked for money to issue citizenship certificates will be handed over to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission soon, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said he would hand over the name of the officer to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

“I have informed Azam and will pass the information on so that the MACC can investigate,” Saifuddin said at a press conference here on Wednesday (July 5).

He declined to reveal details of the case, said that he became aware of the officer’s alleged conduct after a complaint was made to him directly.

Saifuddin said he checked the name of the officer with the NRD, which confirmed his identity and that he is an officer there.

He also said the officer involved demanded “large sums of money” but did not go into further detail.

Saifuddin said his ministry is committed to fighting abuses of power and corruption in all departments under its purview.

“While the number of civil servants involved in wrongdoing is small, they must be stopped,” he said.

During the monthly assembly for the Prime Minister’s Department on Monday (July 3), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he had been informed about payments being asked for documents from the NRD, including citizenship.

“I want to share this information. Yesterday (Sunday), I received information about a matter that may still be under investigation. We want to facilitate those eligible to obtain their legal status, including citizenship,” said Anwar.

“But to get the certificate, it is said that payments were imposed,” he had said.
