MIRI, Dec 7 — A man in his 50s, believed to be a staffer of the Miri Forest Department, was injured in a gas explosion at a laundry near the department located at Baitulmal Building, Miri-Pujut Road, today.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail, who confirmed the incident, said the man was rushed to Miri Hospital by his colleagues.

The identity of the man and the extent of his injuries have yet to be established, he said.

The Miri Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call on the explosion at about 8.02 am and sent eight personnel in a Fire Rescue Tender and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle to the scene.

“Upon arrival, we did a size-up assessment where we still smelt gas leakages in the area.

“There was no fire. We isolated the electrical panel board and cut off the CO2 (carbon dioxide) system in the building before informing the Sarawak Gas Standby Team for further action. Our Forensic Unit has been called to investigate the incident,” Miri Fire and Rescue Station operation commander Mohamad Hamdani Madon said.

The explosion shattered the front glass panel and door of the Forest Department. – BERNAMA
