Malaysia Airlines’ parent MAG unveils first Airbus A330neo

SEPANG: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) introduced its freshly delivered first Airbus A330neo (new engine option) some two weeks after welcoming the new aircraft to its widebody fleet.

MAG group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said the introduction of the airplane marks a transformative modern for the group.

“This commitment underscores our dedication to placing our passengers at the heart of everything we do, delivering an exceptional and unforgettable journey that embodies the warmth and care of Malaysian Hospitality,” he said at the unveiling of the A330neo here today.

The aircraft, bearing registration number 9M-MNG, will be making its maiden flight tonight to Melbourne, Australia from Kuala Lumpur via flight MH149.

MAG signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus and aircraft lessor Avolon in 2022 for the order of 20 A330neos.

The aircraft will be delivered from 2024 through 2028.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the A330neo is the culmination of resilience, determination and an unwavering belief in the power of progress for the country.

“This is not just fleet modernisation. iIt is a strategic decision to future-proof Malaysia Airlines for the demands of a competitive and sustainability-driven aviation market. And the impact goes beyond the aircraft itself,” he said.

Loke added that the Transport Ministry wants Malaysia Airlines to be the airline of choice for Malaysians and foreigners flying to major airports in the world.

He also said MAG plays an important role to make Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a global aviation hub.

The A330neo represents an important partnership between Malaysia and European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

Loke said Malaysia is now the largest supplier of components to Airbus in Southeast Asia.

Some of the Airbus aircraft parts made locally include engine fan casings, avionics and metallic wing components.

“This is a testament to the capabilities of our homegrown aerospace sector, which has become an integral part of the global supply chain.”

“It reflects the skill and dedication of Malaysian engineers, technicians, and innovators who have ensured that ‘Made in Malaysia’ is a mark of excellence in the aviation industry. But this achievement is part of a larger vision,” Loke said.

Malaysia Airlines’ A330neo, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, has 297 seats in total – 28 in Business Class and 269 in Economy Class.

MAG currently operates a fleet of 107 aircraft across its subsidiaries, including Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, MASwings and MASkargo.

The group plans to expand its fleet to 62 narrowbody and 52 widebody aircraft by 2033.

Malaysia Airlines also unveiled an exclusive partnership with Mercedes-Benz as its private terminal transfer service provider starting January 2025.

The private transfer service will be introduced in KLIA Terminal 1 between the Main Terminal Building and Satellite Building.
