PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a man said to be the founder of the website and mobile application Sugarbook, the biggest “sugar daddy-sugar baby” dating service in Asia.
Berita Harian reported that the suspect was arrested in Kuala Lumpur during “Op Sugarbook” at about 4.30pm yesterday.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmat said police would apply for a remand order against the suspect at the Shah Alam court today.
“During early investigation, the suspect admitted to being the founder of the Sugarbook application,” he said, adding that he would be investigated under the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Last week, Sugarbook had revealed that it had seen a 40% increase in students registering to be “sugar babies” since January, with 12,705 students from 10 institutions of higher learning in the Klang Valley using the platform.
Malaysia is home to about 42,500 sugar daddies, the third-highest in Asia after India (338,000) and Indonesia (60,250), according to “sugar dating” website SeekingArrangement.
The higher education ministry, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police have since taken part in investigations into the Sugarbook application and the universities listed in the report.- FMT
