SIBU: One person was burned to death in an early morning fire on Monday (March 29) which destroyed five wooden houses in Lane 13, Jalan Tiong Hua.
Sungai Merah Bomba chief Janggan Muling said the identity of the victim, believed to be a man, is still unknown as he was burned beyond recognition.
“Firemen found the victim after putting out the fire,” he said.
He said the department received a distress call at 1.55am and a total of 24 firemen from Central station and Sungai Merah station were rushed to the scene. Fourteen policemen and four from the Civil Defence Force were also involved in the operation.
Due to the intensity of the fire, it took firemen almost six hours to douse the flames.
“Of the five houses, four of them were completely destroyed while the other one suffered 50% damage,” he said.
These wooden houses were built in the early 1960s and are located about 1km from the town centre.- The Star
