PETALING JAYA: The water supply is being restored to areas affected by to the closure of the Sungai Semenyih treatment plant during the weekend.

Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said that treated water had been restored to several areas since 1am on Tuesday (Dec 24), and several areas would have already received the supply of water.

All areas are expected to have their water supply restored within 72 hours, it said in a statement.

Air Selangor added that the Sungai Semenyih treatment plant had already started operating at 1pm on Monday (Dec 23).

Operations at the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant has not resumed yet because odour pollution is still being detected in the raw water source.

Air Selangor said that it was in the process of stabilising the pressure in the main pipes as well as the main lakes.

“Recovery of water supply to customers will be done in stages depending on the geographical position and altitude of the customer’s premises.

“Areas close to the distribution system are expected to receive supply earlier, ” it said.

The company added that Health Ministry and the National Water Service Commission (SPAN) has conducted periodic monitoring and testing of water quality at the water treatment plant.

The operations of the water treatment plants were stopped at 7.15am on Saturday (Dec 21) after pollution was detected in Sungai Semenyih.

The closure affected 336,930 account holders in 366 locations in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, and Sepang.

The dumping of waste into manholes in Bandar Bukit Mahkota had forced the closure of the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant twice in three months.

Oily residue was found in a Bukit Mahkota manhole last week, which Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) confirmed to be the source of odour pollution that forced the shutdown of the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants, as well as the Bandar Bukit Mahkota sewage treatment plant on Saturday. -The Star
