KUALA LUMPUR: The higher education ministry is in discussion with the finance ministry to “further consider” extending the loan moratorium for the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Its minister Noraini Ahmad said this in answering a question from Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) who had asked if the government would extend the moratorium for PTPTN borrowers after December.

He asked: “Will it be extended for another six months?”

Noraini said borrowers had been given two moratorium extensions since April and that this was extended again from October to December.

Despite the moratorium, she said, 422,609 borrowers had been paying their PTPTN loans. She added that due to Covid-19, her ministry might not blacklist those who did not pay.

She said they would instead look at ways to encourage borrowers to make payments once the moratorium ended.

Other measures being considered was to allow borrowers to restructure their payments till they were 60 years old and to allow them to postpone payments for 24 months, she said. -FMT
