PETALING JAYA: Malaysian sprinter Azreen Nabila Alias has made an immediate impact in her Olympics debut by clocking a personal best of 11.77s in the women’s 100m heats at the Olympics Stadium in Tokyo on Saturday (July 30).
In the second heat, the 21-year-old finished second behind Iran’s Fasihi Farzaneh, who posted 11.76s. Kuwait’s Mudahi Alshammari was third with a time of 11.82s.
Azreen’s previous personal best was 11.81s which she had timed en route to winning a gold at the 2018 Perak Malaysia Games (Sukma).
This season, her best was only 12s, which she had set in winning the 100m gold at the Malaysian Grand Prix Championship in April.
The Terengganu-born Azreen is through to the qualification round, which will be held later in the afternoon. She will run in heat six.
Meanwhile, high jumper Lee Hup Wei did not qualify for the final in his third Olympics after he failed to clear the height of 2.17m in all three attempts in Group A qualification.-The Star
