Agong declares emergency to curb Covid-19 spread

PETALING JAYA, 12 Jan 2020 (The Capital Post)- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, has declared a state of emergency to curb the spread of Covid-19.

In a statement, the Palace said the King had met with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at 5.30pm yesterday.

The statement also mentioned Sultan Abdullah has consented for the emergency to last until 1st August or an earlier date if the situation stabalized or recovered.

The palace said other Malay rulers also approved it after the discussion.

Sultan Abdullah sees that now the spread of Covid-19 in the nation is at dangerous level and 
that, on the basis of Article 150(1) of the Federal Constitution, there is need to declare an emergency. 
“This declaration also takes into consideration of the safety of the people and the interest of the nation.
It is also relevant to the current statistics of Covid-19 , specifically the logistical constraints in each state”
It mentioned that Putrajaya would form an independent task force consisting of MPs from government and opposition as well as health professionals who would advise the King if the emergency could be terminated earlier.
