1,921 new Covid-19 cases reported on June 21

KUALA LUMPUR: Another 1,921 new Covid-19 cases were detected yesterday (June 21) with a majority of them in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

The Health Ministry’s Github data repository showed Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 714, Kuala Lumpur with 521 and 125 in Penang.

The fresh infections raise the cumulative load to 4,544,626 since the pandemic began in 2020.

Yesterday’s figures were made up of 1,807 local cases while 114 others were imported.

The ministry’s CovidNow portal showed an additional 203 active cases bringing the total to 26,155.

Most of the active cases, up to 25,059 cases are home quarantined; 1,052 are hospitalised while 15 were placed at the quarantine and low risk treatment centres.

There were 20 ventilated cases while nine did not require any at the intensive care units (ICU), with most of the patients admitted in the Klang Valley.

There were 451 admissions to hospitals, largely in Selangor with 137 and 107 in Johor.

Two deaths occurred yesterday, with none brought-in-dead. The death toll now stands at 35,737.

The recoveries came up to 1,716.

Separately, 49 per cent or 1,737,987 children aged five to 11 have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Another 36.6 per cent or 1,299,348 have been fully inoculated against the virus.

As for adolescents aged 12 to 17, 96.5 per cent or 3,001,413 have gotten their first shot while 93.6 per cent or 2,911,081 are completely immunised.

No booster shots were offered to the two age groups so far.

As for adults aged 18 and above, 99 per cent or 23,282,208 have had one shot of the vaccine.

Those with two doses amounted to 97.8 per cent or 23,004,677 while 68.6 per cent 16,129,557 have received their booster doses.-NST
