National Covid-19 Rt climbs to 1.00

KUALA LUMPUR: The national infectivity rate (Rt) climbed to 1.00 on Tuesday, said health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Based on data shared by Dr Noor Hisham, there were six states with an Rt above 1.00 on Jan 11, namely Labuan (1.12), Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur (1.08), Sabah (1.07), Melaka (105) and Negri Sembilan (1.04).

This is followed by Kedah with an Rt of 1.00, Selangor (0.99), Johor, Kelantan and Pahang (0.98), Penang (0.97), Perak (0.94), Perlis (0.90), Sarawak (0.89) and Terengganu (0.85).

Rt, an indicator of how contagious the infection is, shows the average number of people who will contract the disease from a single infected person.

The last time the country reported an Rt above 1.00 was on Nov 12 (1.04), with 6,517 daily cases registered.

At the time, the Rt stayed above 1.00 for more than a week before it gradually declined starting Nov 24.

Meanwhile, 27 deaths were reported yesterday, including nine brought-in-dead (BID) cases, taking the death toll to 31,723.

The fatalities were nine in Selangor, four each in Johor and Terengganu, Sabah and Kuala Lumpur (three each), and one each in Kelantan, Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Pahang.

The nine BIDs were two each in Sabah and Selangor, and one each in Johor, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Terengganu, and Kuala Lumpur.

The current fatality rate in Malaysia is at 0.6 per cent, where eight deaths were reported per million people in the past two weeks.

A total 3,175 new infections and 2,977 recoveries were reported as of noon yesterday.

272 were imported cases with 129 in Kuala Lumpur, 79 Selangor, Johor (18), Perak (eight), Melaka, Pahang and Penang (six each), Kelantan (five), Negri Sembilan and Putrajaya (four each), Kedah and Terengganu (three each) and Sabah (one).

Four new clusters – two high-risk groups, one religious and one workplace – were detected in Johor and Selangor yesterday.

The two high-risk groups were identified in Johor (Jalan Berlian) and Selangor (Jalan Au1).

The religious cluster, Pulai Perdana Tiga, in Johor Baru and Kulai, Johor, has 47 positive cases while the workplace cluster, Jalan 1/5 Semenyih, in Hulu Langat, Selangor, has 21 confirmed cases.

The active cases have slightly climbed to 39,913.

Currently, 66.3 per cent of hospital beds nationwide are being used.

As of yesterday, 130 patients are being treated at ICUs where 99 of them are ventilated.

Meanwhile, 35.4 per cent of the adult population (8,284,539 people) have received booster shots.

Yesterday, 251,860 doses of vaccines were administered including 248,659 boosters.-NST
