The former minister during Pakatan Harapan’s administration will be charged by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in relation to the alleged misappropriation of funds collected during a fundraising dinner which had been organised in 2018.

Syed Saddiq, who is now Parti Ikatan Demokratik (Muda) president, is expected to face charges under Section 403 and Section 405 of the Penal Code for dishonest misappropriation and criminal breach of trust.

The offence carries a maximum five years’ jail and fine.

The 28-year-old politician will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court around 9am.

Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq in a twitter post said that he was ready to face the charges that had been lined up against him.

“It is (during) moments like this that I am reminded why I joined politics. Truth will always prevail. I would rather walk into the courtroom than join PN. Bring it on!”

Muda secretary-general Amir Abd Hadi, in a statement, said the dinner had been organised to collect funds for the 14th general election.

The party accused the authorities of conducting political persecution against its president by hauling him to court now.

“They could have charged him a long time ago as all the witnesses had been called in since last year.

“However, it is being used to pressure Syed Saddiq into supporting the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government. It was done from the time when the voting to elect the Dewan Rakyat Speaker was held, before the tabling of the 2021 Budget and now when Parliament is about to reconvene,” he said.

However, he said Syed Saddiq had all this while been steadfast with his stand of not supporting PN.

Amir claimed the party had proof of all these and the evidence would be revealed in court.

“The allegation that he misappropriated party funds is nothing but a malicious accusation… it is not true.”-NST
